This Fall, Fondulac District Library is holding a Spooky Halloween Writing Contest for adults and teens! With our wonderful panel of judges, the submissions will be narrowed to three winning authors for both the adult and teen categories. So, send us your bone-chilling stories to jeremy@fondulaclibrary.org by October 18. Below are some writing prompt ideas. You don’t have to use them, but they might be fun!

  1. Write a story that takes place in a haunted library.
  2. While reading a scary book, you realize you’re a character in it.
  3. You find a diary that was owned by a vampire.

First Place – $50 Gift Card

 Submission Guidelines

  • Only original material may be entered.
  • There are two categories: one for teens (ages 13-17) and one for adults (18 and over). 
  • All entries must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and in 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
  • Email with the subject: “SPOOKY HALLOWEEN WRITING CONTEST” and include your name, phone number, indicate if you are in the teen or adult category, and if you give permission to post your story with your name if you win (or if you wish to remain anonymous). Attach the story’s file to the email.
  • Entries must be in good taste and refrain from profanity and extreme violence. This is a spooky Halloween contest, not a gruesome horror contest. 
  • On the last page of your story, below the ending write: “THE END”
  • Word limit is 1,000 words, but stories can be shorter. 
  • Limited one entry per person.
  • Deadline on October 18
